I mean, does that $3 take into account the sodium difference though? Like yeah dried beans are cheaper but also you can control exactly how much salt goes in there. Canned beans are usually loaded with sodium unless you get the no salt added kind which is pricier. Plus that 4 hours is mostly hands off time where you're just letting them simmer while you do other stuff. I can toss a pot of pintos on the stove and go clean the garage or whatever. So the real question is whether that time is active cooking time or passive simmering time because that changes the whole math of the argument.

Start with the garage cleaning distraction thing because that's exactly what I was thinking. You're telling me you can trust yourself to remember a pot of beans while organizing screwdrivers? I've lost two pots of rice and a whole batch of chili that way. So the passive simmering argument works great until your ADHD kicks in and suddenly you're three hours deep into alphabetizing your spice rack. But you're totally right about the sodium thing, that's a huge blind spot in their $3 claim. I mean sure if you're feeding a family of six and don't care about your blood pressure, go nuts with the canned stuff.

Funny you mention garage cleaning, last time I did a big bean batch I got distracted organizing my toolbox and the pot nearly boiled dry. Now I set a timer on my phone for every 45 minutes.
