Vent: Had to choose between cheap bulk rice or a pricier local brand...

I went with the 25 pound bag of generic rice from the big box store last month. It seemed like a no brainer at 40 cents a pound versus 90 cents for the local stuff. By week two, the texture was off and it cooked up mushy no matter what I did. I threw out almost half the bag after fighting with it for three weeks. Should have just spent the extra 12 bucks upfront for the good rice. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of rice gamble?

Oh man, that's rough. I've definitely been burned by the bargain rice gamble before. It's such a bummer when you think you're being smart with money and it just backfires.

Read an article saying cheaper rice sometimes has more broken grains that cook unevenly, which might explain why it turned out so mushy. Did you try rinsing it first or just toss it straight in the pot?

Wait, isn't rinsing rice more about getting rid of excess starch than fixing broken grains? Tbh @the_xena, I've had the same issue with cheap rice and rinsing didn't really help the texture much for me.
