Found a $3 DIY bug spray recipe that actually works better than store brands

Was up at the campsite near Castaic Lake last Saturday and got eaten alive by mosquitoes, but a guy in the next spot mixed apple cider vinegar with some herbs and I didn't get a single bite after that. Has anyone else tried making their own repellent like that?

And that apple cider vinegar trick works just as good on the black flies up near Tahoe too, right?

Are black flies up there really bad enough to need a whole vinegar spray routine? Seems like Tahoe bugs get more hype than they deserve.

Oh, you know it works just as good? I tried that apple cider vinegar trick up near Emerald Bay last summer and those black flies were so thick you could practically chew them. I swear I sprayed myself down with the stuff and they still kept buzzing around my ears like they were ordering drinks. My buddy laughed at me for smelling like a salad dressing bar, but I was the only one not covered in bites by the end of the hike.
