Found out the hard way that cheap air filters cost me more in the long run

I bought a 4-pack of fiberglass filters for $8 at the dollar store last month. My HVAC unit started running twice as long to cool the house and my electric bill went up $35. Has anyone else found a good balance between cheap filters and energy costs?

Ngl those cheap filters just choke your system airflow and make it work way harder.

Depends on the setup honestly. My buddy runs those cheap fiberglass ones in his 20 year old furnace and it's been fine for like 5 years. Sure maybe a really high end system with a fancy variable speed blower cares more but my basic unit just chugs along. The AC still blows cold and the filter catches the big stuff which is all I really need. Feel like people get way too worked up over what's basically a piece of cardboard and some screen.

Man I feel you on this, honestly. People act like you need a HEPA filter just to keep a house warm and it's wild. My old furnace has been running on those cheap blue fiberglass ones for years and it's still kicking, no issues at all. Sure maybe if you got a top of the line system you'd care more, but for the rest of us it's just overthinking it. Sometimes good enough really is good enough, you know?
