Guy at the hardware store told me to skip the 'budget' furnace filters, said they cost him $200 more in electricity one winter.

That "cost him $200 more" claim seems a bit extreme to me.

Patjones is right about the dust buildup. It's a slow drain that adds up over time.

My buddy's AC unit lost about 15% efficiency in one season because of a clogged filter. The repair guy said it was running nearly non-stop to keep up. That extra strain has to shorten the life of the whole system, right?

That makes sense, cheaper filters can let dust build up and make the system work harder.
