Heard a guy at the hardware store say he'd rather fix something three times than buy new once, and it hit different lol

Read an article about the "right to repair" movement. It argued that fixing things builds a different kind of relationship with your stuff, makes you less wasteful. That hardware store guy would probably agree. It's not just about saving money, it's a whole mindset.

My own fix-it jobs usually need a fourth try.

My buddy's old snowblower needed the carb cleaned three times last winter before I got it right lmao. But after the third time I knew every hose and bolt in that thing. I get what @the_dylan is saying about the mindset thing. There's something about knowing exactly why something works and what makes it tick that new stuff just doesn't give you. My grandpa had this old drill from the 80s that he'd rebuilt so many times he could probably do it blindfolded. He'd always say "buying new is easy, fixing is what teaches you.
