I finally looked up the actual cost of a water softener for my place

I was sure I needed one because of the hard water spots on everything. Checked a local plumbing supply site and the average system for a house my size is over $2,500, not counting install. I found a study from the University of Arizona that said for most people, just using a citric acid rinse in the dishwasher and a vinegar spray for fixtures works just as well for spot prevention. Has anyone else skipped the big system and gone with simple fixes like that?

Honestly that study sounds about right. Hard water is annoying but it's mostly a cosmetic issue, not like your pipes are gonna explode. The cheap fixes are probably fine for most people.

Ever feel like your vinegar spray is judging your life choices, @jennyp19? Mine definitely is.
