My old pressure cooker finally gave out after 14 years of service
Last week I went to make beans and the handle just snapped clean off the lid. That thing was my grandma's from her apartment on Cherry Street, and I'd only replaced the gasket twice in all that time. A new one at the thrift store ran me $8, but the locking mechanism feels flimsy compared to the old metal latch. Has anyone found a decent used brand that holds up, or am I better off saving up for a commercial one?
Old stuff really was built different, and it feels like everything new is just waiting to fail. Every time I buy a new tool or kitchen gadget it's like they plan for it to break right after the warranty runs out. Your grandma's pot lasted 14 years with just a couple gaskets, that tells you all you need to know about quality now vs then. I've noticed folks hold onto these old items way harder because they just don't make em like that anymore. The thrift store ones can be a gamble for sure, but sometimes you find that hidden gem that's got decades left in it. Honestly at this rate a commercial one might be worth it just to not deal with the frustration again.
