Rant: the checkout lady in Newhall said I was smart for buying dented canned tomatoes and I almost felt bad
I was at the Food 4 Less on Lyons Ave on Saturday and the cashier said "you know those are dented right" like I was making a mistake. I said yeah, that's why they're 79 cents instead of two bucks, and she goes "oh I could never." Ma'am, it's a can. The dent is in the metal, not the tomatoes inside. I get roughly $40 a month back just from grabbing dinged cans and squished boxes of pasta, and the food tastes the exact same. The part that got me was her acting like I was eating trash in front of her. Has anyone else caught side-eye for buying the marked-down stuff, or is it just the stores around here?
Dented cans can actually mess with the seal and let bacteria in, so the store is basically hoping you won't notice. Saving a buck isn't worth a night on the toilet if the can got bent near the rim. Plus most folks aren't wrong to side-eye it, they're just looking out for you.
