Showerthought: Is bulk buying at Costco actually cheaper or just a trap to spend more?

I was at the Santa Clarita Costco last weekend and dropped $200 on a giant pack of laundry pods and paper towels, but my neighbor swears she saves more by just buying what she needs week to week at the local market. Which side actually wins out over a month when you factor in the membership fee and impulse buys?

Oh yeah, the "garage shrine" is REAL. I bought that giant box of 96 rolls of toilet paper once and my husband was like "are we hoarding for the apocalypse?" But honestly, unless you're feeding a family of 12, you're basically just paying a membership fee to stockpile stuff you'll forget you even bought. The only REAL savings I see is if you actually use up EVERYTHING before it expires - good luck with that 5 pound bag of spinach.

lol is it really that deep? i mean yeah bulk buying can save you a few bucks but drop $200 at once and you're basically just paying for the convenience of having a year's worth of paper towels in your garage. your neighbor probably isn't wrong either if she's only buying what she needs and not impulse grabbing a 50 pack of protein bars cause they were on sale. honestly it's not that serious unless you're actually crunching numbers on laundry pod per load vs. the membership fee - you do you.

Haha, my garage is basically a Costco shrine at this point.
