That whole 'buy generic food save money' thing I called BS on for years

I finally gave in last month and swapped my regular cereal for the store brand at Vons, saved $3.50 a box and honestly can't taste the difference. Anyone else find a generic that actually beat the name brand?

Vons is actually where I noticed it too. Their canned diced tomatoes are the same as the name brand ones for half the price. But the real thing I figured out is that the store brand works great for stuff like flour, sugar, salt, basic pantry items. The name brand companies spend millions on packaging and ads and we pay for it. I started buying mostly generic about six months ago and my grocery bill dropped by like 30 bucks a week. The only stuff I still buy name brand is things like ketchup or peanut butter where the recipe is actually different. It's wild how much of the price is just hype.

Yeah actually I gotta call out the ketchup thing a little. Store brand ketchup is totally fine in most recipes or for cooking, I've done blind taste tests with my roommates and nobody could tell the difference in a burger. The only one that's really different is Heinz because they use more sugar and vinegar. But if you're just using it for like meatloaf or bbq sauce, save the 4 bucks and grab the generic.
