The $3 thrift store pan that beat my $80 nonstick

I kept burning eggs and replacing cheap pans every 4 months. Saw a beat up cast iron skillet at the Goodwill in Stevenson Ranch for $3 and grabbed it on a whim. Spent $10 on a chainmail scrubber and spent one afternoon seasoning it with canola oil. Now I cook everything in that thing and it works better than any fancy pan I've owned. Anyone else had luck resurrecting thrift store cookware, or am I just lucky?

Why do folks drop big money on pans when old iron just works better?
