Warning: my neighbor told me my compost pile was attracting rats and I had to change my whole setup

I switched from an open heap to a sealed tumbler found on Facebook Marketplace for $20, and now my backyard smells way better and the rats moved on to the next house - has anyone else had to troubleshoot a pest problem with their cheap DIY system?

Rats are persistent little jerks, no doubt about it. @the_angela hit it right - they're already around, just looking for the path of least resistance. $20 for a sealed tumbler is a steal though. Sealed systems are the way to go if you have close neighbors. Now you just gotta hope a rat doesn't figure out how to climb it.

My neighbor's cat brought a dead rat to my doorstep two days after I started composting last spring. That's when I realized the whole street probably had a rat problem and my pile was just the buffet. What I've noticed is people get obsessed with the wrong thing - they blame the compost or the bird feeder or the unsecured trash can, but rats are already in the neighborhood looking for any easy meal. The real trick is making your yard the least attractive option on the block, not trying to be the only house without a single crumb out.

Ngl that's a pretty good deal for a $20 tumbler.
