A homeowner decided to 'help' me on the roof yesterday

He grabbed the ladder to steady it just as I was coming down. The sudden movement made the whole thing wobble, and I had to hug the shingles to stay put. Always check who's at the base before you descend.

Oh man, that's the WORST kind of help. Nothing makes your heart jump like a ladder moving when you're not ready for it. Had a similar scare once and never trusted a spotter again.

Honestly, I get the scare but never trusting a spotter again? Is it really that bad if you just tell them how to help properly? On jobs, I've had guys hold ladders right by keeping feet planted and hands ready. It just takes a second to explain, no big drama.

Tried being helpful once and ended up shaking the ladder so bad I almost launched the guy into orbit. Now I just stand there and yell encouraging things from solid ground.
