Honestly, a guy at the Chicago builders meetup last month told me 'never trust a forum post that doesn't show the receipts' and it stuck with me.

Used to think showing your work was just showing off. Then I saw a post about the best way to frame a basement wall, and two guys went back and forth for pages. One just kept saying his way was right. The other posted photos of his test walls, the load numbers from his engineer, and a video of the stress test. Changed my whole view on taking advice from strangers online.

Last year I was trying to figure out the right spacing for deck joists for a hot tub. One guy kept saying 12 inches on center was fine, but another user posted a full diagram from his building permit, photos of his own framing with a level on it, and the actual span table from the code book circled in red. That photo album is why my deck doesn't sag.

Show the receipts" is the new "trust but verify.
