My $600 mist coating experiment turned into a disaster

Bought that fancy moisture barrier system for my basement last month. Cost me $600 and 2 full weekends of work. The guy at the hardware store swore it would fix the damp smell. Now my walls are peeling and I got mold growing behind the panels. Anyone else get burned by one of these overpriced waterproofing kits?

The hardware store guy probably meant well but those kits are really hit or miss depending on your specific situation. Your basement might have hydrostatic pressure pushing water through the foundation, which no peel-and-stick panel is gonna stop. My buddy tried the same thing on his 1950s house and the mold came back worse than before after two months. Might be worth getting a free estimate from a real waterproofing company just to see what you're actually dealing with. At the very least you could have skipped all that labor and put the $600 toward a proper fix.

600 bucks for peel-and-stick, oof. That's a pricey lesson in hydrostatic pressure.
