My whole crew thinks you can skip the second coat of primer on new drywall

I mean, I did that on a job in Boise last month and the paint started peeling after two weeks. Had to go back and fix it all, which cost me a full day. Anyone else had a finish fail because you cut a corner like that?

Forget the peeling, think about the color. That single coat of primer lets the drywall's natural color and texture bleed through, so your final paint color never looks right. You end up using way more topcoat to try and cover it up.

My uncle's a painter and he always says two thin coats of primer is the only way to seal fresh drywall. That gray or brown paper color underneath will absolutely ghost through with just one, especially with lighter paint. You'll fight it for three coats of your expensive finish paint and still see patches. It feels like a waste of time up front, but it saves so much paint and frustration later.

Yeah I always thought one was fine but you're totally right about the color showing through.
