Showerthought: I was building my entire site around a single keyword for months.

I saw a competitor's page rank for a dozen different long-tail phrases I never even considered... they were getting traffic from searches I didn't track. Has anyone else found a better way to spot those hidden keyword opportunities?

Yeah that "traffic from searches I didn't track" part is the real killer. Read a blog post about using Google Search Console for this exact thing. You look at the queries you already rank for on page two or three. Those are your hidden long tail phrases. Just optimize those pages a bit more. Way easier than guessing new keywords.

Spot on about using Search Console. I literally did this last week for a client's gardening site. They were ranking #11 for "how to fix yellow tomato leaves." Added a quick FAQ section with that exact phrase, bumped the word count a little, and now they're sitting at #4. It's free traffic just sitting there waiting for a title tag tweak or an extra paragraph.
