My old roommate swore you should never lend money to friends, and I laughed at him until I did it twice in one summer
So back in 2019 I lived with this guy Marcus in Columbus. Solid dude, kind of a cynic. He had one rule he would not shut up about: never mix money and friendship. I thought he was just cheap. Then my buddy Dave needed $600 for rent in June, said he would pay me back in two weeks. I handed it over same day. Then in August my other friend Kayla needed $400 for a car repair, same deal. Both promised. Both went quiet. Dave dodged me for six weeks and finally paid after I had to ask three times, which felt gross. Kayla just stopped replying to texts entirely. Lost the money and the friendship. The part that bugs me is Marcus was right and I never even gave him a chance to say I told you so, he just shrugged when I complained. The weird thing is Dave and I are fine now, it was Kayla who vanished, and she was the one I was closest with. So what is it, does lending money kill the friendship no matter what, or only when they know they can't pay you back? Anyone got a story where it actually worked out?
