DAE notice how much harder it got to fill a simple job opening in the past 18 months?
I run a small landscaping company here in Boise with about 12 guys on the crew. Two years ago, when I posted a job for a general laborer at $17 an hour, I would get maybe 25 applications in a week. Last month I posted the same job at $19 an hour and got 3. Three applications in 10 days. I called one guy back and he told me he had 4 other offers on the table and went with a company that pays for his boots and gives him Fridays off. So I started asking around at the local supply yard and a few other owners said the same thing happened to them. One guy who runs a concrete crew said he lost two good workers to a warehouse job that pays less but has air conditioning. I ended up raising the pay to $21 and throwing in a gas card, and I finally got someone hired after 5 weeks. Has anyone else seen the pool of applicants dry up this fast, or is it just something in my area?
Figure the whole hiring game flipped because workers finally got the upper hand and they know it. Give it a few more years and you'll see guys shopping around for stuff like boot money or a four day week the same way we used to chase a bigger check. Seems like the days of just posting a wage and having people line up are done for good.
