I stopped using fancy accounting software and went back to a paper ledger for my shop
Back in 2018 I bought into all the hype about cloud accounting apps. Spent about $80 a month on one of those big names. It tracked everything automatically, linked to my bank, all that stuff. But I found myself just staring at dashboards and never actually understanding my numbers. Then last November my internet went down for 4 days during a snowstorm and I couldn't check anything. Had to dig out an old notebook and do my weekly totals by hand for the first time in years. Honestly? It clicked. I now do a paper ledger every Friday afternoon before I lock up. Takes me 45 minutes. I catch mistakes way faster, and I remember what each number actually means. My accountant thinks I'm nuts but he says my records are cleaner than any client he has. Anyone else dump the fancy tools for something dumb and simple? What was the thing you switched back to?

Writing stuff down does force some focus, sure. But 45 minutes every Friday adds up to almost 4 hours a month, and I'd rather spend that on something that actually grows the business. Sometimes simple just means slower, not better.

Isn't that the same reason everyone's going back to vinyl records and film cameras?

I remember what each number actually means" hit me hard because I used to be the total opposite. I thought anyone doing paper books was living in the stone age and I told my buddy that when he switched back in 2020. Then I tried it for a month just to prove him wrong and man, I ate my words. It's like the act of writing it down forces your brain to actually pay attention instead of just trusting a screen. I still keep quickbooks for my accountant but my real books are a spiral notebook now, and I get more done in that Friday hour than I ever did scrolling through reports all week.
