POS system crashed mid lunch rush Friday

My Square terminal froze right at 12:30 last Friday when we had 15 orders lined up. I had to switch to paper tickets and a calculator for 45 minutes until it came back. Lost probably $200 in sales while we were scrambling. Anyone else have a backup plan for when your main system goes down?

Oh I feel your pain on that "POS system crashed mid lunch rush" situation. What worked for me after a similar disaster was keeping a small spiral notebook and a basic calculator in the cash drawer at all times. I also printed out a simple menu with prices taped to the counter so I could scribble orders fast without looking stuff up. The biggest thing that saved me was training my staff ahead of time on a manual emergency checklist - we practiced it twice a year so nobody froze when the screen went black. You mentioned lost sales, and I learned to keep a sign ready that says "Cash only until system returns" which helps people know what's happening and stops some from walking out.

Used to think a backup plan was overkill but you changed my mind on that.
