Tried handing out $20 gift cards to my crew instead of a holiday party, and one guy's reaction caught me off guard
I run a small plumbing outfit, just me and three guys, and for years I did the whole holiday dinner thing at a steakhouse in town. Last December I did the math and realized I was dropping around $600 on one meal plus drinks, and honestly half the time everybody was tired and just wanted to go home. So I switched it up and gave each guy a $150 gift card plus a card I wrote myself. Two of them said thanks and moved on, which is fine. But my lead guy, who has been with me six years, pulled me aside a week later and said he used it to fix his mom's furnace before Christmas. He never would have asked me for help with that. That hit me harder than I expected. Now I'm wondering if the dinner was ever really for them or just for me to feel like a good boss. Any other owners out there switch from a group thing to straight cash or cards? Did it feel weird the first year?
