Shoutout to the payroll software that ate my Friday and didn't even say sorry
So I run a small landscaping crew out here in Sacramento, 6 guys, and I do all the books myself because hiring a real accountant felt like overkill until about 3 weeks ago. I switched us over to a new payroll service because the old one kept messing up the direct deposits, and the new company promised setup would take "a couple hours tops." It took me 11 days and I still had to call their support line 4 separate times. The problem was that they needed my old payroll reports in a very specific CSV format, and nobody there could actually tell me which columns went where, so I just kept uploading files and getting the same vague error message over and over. One rep literally told me to "try opening it in a different browser" which is the business services version of telling someone to jiggle the handle. When it finally worked, it turned out one column header had a space in it that wasn't supposed to be there, 11 days for one space. Is this normal with payroll switches or did I just pick a bad company, because I'm about ready to go back to paper checks and a calculator.
