Wasted $80 on a fancy electric knife sharpener that turned my blades into butter knives
Picked up one of those pull-through sharpeners from a kitchen supply store last month. Figured it would save me time over using my whetstone. First few passes seemed fine but after a week I couldn't even get a clean slice through a pork belly. Tested it on a scrap piece and the edge was completely rounded off. Anyone else fall for a gadget that just wrecked your knives?

Man that sucks, I feel your pain. Pull through sharpeners are basically knife destroyers, they rip off way too much metal and leave a jagged edge that never really holds. I fell for one of those electric models last year and my Wusthof chefs knife went from razor sharp to a complete joke in about two weeks. The worst part is you probably paid good money thinking it was a upgrade, only to have to spend more time fixing the damage with a real stone. I got mine back to decent shape with a 1000 grit whetstone and about an hour of elbow grease, but it's still not what it used to be. At least now you know to stick with the old school method, cheap gadgets never beat the real thing.

Wait, 1000 grit is way too coarse for finishing a chefs knife, you need at least 3000 to get that edge back right.
