Bought a $40 cast iron pan from Target and honestly its way better than my grandma's vintage Wagner

Everyone always says old cast iron is unbeatable, but I snagged a new Lodge last week for 40 bucks and cooked a steak that came out perfect on the first try. The surface was smooth right out of the box, no decades of seasoning needed. Has anyone else found that new budget gear works just as good as the heirloom stuff?

Wait wait wait, did you just say the surface was smooth right out of the box? I've never seen a new Lodge that wasn't rough like sandpaper straight from the factory. That's wild. Maybe Target gets a different batch or something, but every budget pan I've seen has that gritty finish you gotta sand down yourself. Still, good for you if it worked. I'm just shocked your grandma's old Wagner got beat out by a store brand pan.

Lmao "rough like sandpaper" is literally every Lodge I've ever touched too. I sanded mine down with 80 grit for like an hour before I even seasoned it. Wild that yours came smooth, maybe they're finally fixing their QC or something.
