Bought a cheap vacuum sealer for $25 on Amazon and it died after 8 uses

I tried sealing a batch of venison from last season and the plastic never even got hot, so I bought a used FoodSaver from a garage sale for $10 and now I can actually vacuum seal without having to throw the machine away every 6 months - has anyone else had better luck finding older versions of kitchen gear at thrift stores?

Found that gold too, older stuff just hits different.

Did you ever run into those old Harvest Master canners from the 80s... I found one in my aunt's basement and it's built like a tank, still seals jars perfectly with that thick rubber gasket.

Is that the one with the big red handle on top? I heard those things were practically indestructible, some old timer in a hardware store told me they used a thicker gauge steel than what they sell nowadays. That rubber gasket is the real key, once those start to go you can't find replacements worth a damn. The new ones use these thin plastic seals that crack after a few seasons and you're just throwing money away trying to keep them working. Your aunt probably used it every fall for canning tomatoes or green beans and it'll outlast all of us.
