Hot take: cheap cast iron pans are better than expensive ones
Everyone raves about vintage Griswold pans, but I grabbed a $25 no-name skillet from a flea market in Tulsa. After a buddy pointed out my seasoning was too thick and flaking, I stripped it down and built a thin layer with flaxseed oil... works just as good as my buddy's $200 pan. Anyone else find the budget stuff holds up better?

Stripping it down and starting thin is the only way to go with those cheap pans.

Got a cheap lodge from a friend who was gonna toss it. Scorched it down to bare metal with a self cleaning oven cycle, which set off every smoke alarm in the house. Neighbor came over thinking my place was on fire. Ended up giving her a beer and explaining the whole seasoning process. Now she's got her own beat up pan and won't shut up about how good her eggs turn out. Sometimes you gotta make a mess before you can make something nice.

Man, I feel you on this. I found a beat up old pan at a garage sale for $10, sanded it smooth, and gave it a few thin coats of crisco. It’s hands down my favorite pan now, even next to my sister’s fancy name brand ones. Sometimes the simple stuff just gets the job done better.
