My late grandad's old cast iron skillet vs a fancy new $200 nonstick pan...

I had to choose between my grandad's crusty old cast iron skillet and a $200 nonstick pan from Williams Sonoma. I went with the cast iron and it's handled everything I've thrown at it for 5 years now, while my buddy's nonstick is already scratched up. Anybody else ditch the new stuff for something older that just works?

Wait, you actually chose the old cast iron over a brand new $200 pan? lol I used to be all about the fancy nonstick stuff too, swore it was the only way to cook eggs without a mess. But then my brother-in-law gave me his grandma's old cast iron skillet and I was super skeptical at first. Honestly, it changed my whole mind about cooking. That thing just gets better the more you use it and it's never let me down, even with sticky stuff. My buddy dropped $150 on a nonstick last year and it's already flaking, while mine still looks the same as when I got it. You can't really beat something that's built to last forever, even if it looks like a relic from the stone age lol.

Honestly @terry_lewis21 is right about cast iron lasting forever, but nonstick pans aren't totally useless either. I keep one around just for eggs and fish, stuff that really sticks to everything no matter how good the seasoning is. Just don't spend $200 on it and you're fine.

The old cast iron just keeps going. My mom has one that's been in the family since the 70s and it's still perfect. Meanwhile I've had three nonstick pans die in that same time span. The coating always starts peeling eventually and then you're just eating little flecks of Teflon with your eggs. Plus cast iron doubles as a weapon if someone breaks in, so that's a bonus.
