Rant: Everyone loves Darn Tough socks but my pair fell apart in 8 months

I know these socks have a cult following and people say they last forever. I bought 3 pairs for about $25 each at an outdoor store in Portland last spring. By December two of them had holes in the heel. I sent them back for the warranty replacement and the new ones are already thinning after 3 months. Am I the only one getting bad batches or is the quality just not what it used to be?

Man, that's rough. My first pair of Darn Toughs lasted like four years no problem. Then I bought two more maybe two years ago and one got a hole in the toe after six months. I think the quality has definitely slipped. Maybe they got bought out or changed their wool supplier or something. You're not crazy, I've seen a few other people saying the same thing lately.

Blame the synthetic blend they started using around 2021 - look at the tag on your replacements, if it says 56% merino instead of 60% or higher, that's the problem. Less wool means less durability and they switched suppliers to cut costs during the pandemic. Your new ones thinning after 3 months confirms they're using weaker materials now.
