Showerthought: That time my 20-year-old vacuum finally gave up mid-clean
I was in my living room last Saturday, just running my old vacuum over the rug like always, when it just stopped with a loud pop. No smoke, no weird smell, just dead. I opened it up and the belt had snapped and the brush roller was all jammed up with hair. I tried to fix it for an hour but the plastic housing was cracked too. Has anyone else had a vacuum that just hits a wall after years of reliable service?

Oh man, that's brutal! I used to think vacuums just kinda faded away, getting weaker and weaker until you finally gave up on them. But you're totally right, sometimes they just go out with a bang. My old one did something similar, just seized up mid-sweep with a horrible grinding noise while I was trying to get a cheerio out from under the couch. I had always assumed I'd get some warning, but nope, one minute it's running fine and the next it's a paperweight with a cracked belt and a sad smell of burning dust. It really changed my mind about how these things actually die.

What did that burning dust smell like exactly?
