Update: my $22 desk fan quit mid shift at 2am and I fixed it with a bread tie
Sitting in my tiny apartment in Boise last Wednesday at 2am, the fan on my desk just stopped cold while I was finishing up some paperwork. I cracked it open expecting a burnt motor, but the blade was just jammed against a bent plastic ring inside the housing. I straightened the ring with my thumb, wrapped a bread tie around the spot where the plastic had split, and it spun right back up like nothing happened. That fan has run every single night for 3 summers now, so I was ready to just order a replacement. Instead I got another 5 months out of a plain bread tie and zero dollars spent. Has anyone else kept a cheap fan alive way past its expected life, or am I just stubborn about tossing stuff?
