I finally listened to that old cabinetmaker at the supplier.

Was grabbing some Blum soft-close hinges last week and this guy in his 70s comes up and says 'you should switch to the undermount slides, they hold better over time.' I shrugged him off at first. But after he walked away I stood there a minute and realized he's probably seen more kitchens fail than I've built. So I bought a box of 10 undermounts to test on my next job. Anyone else ever get advice from the old dudes at the lumber yard that turned out to be gold?

Tbh, I think you're making a bigger deal out of this than it really is. Undermount slides are fine, sure, but side-mounts have been working great for decades and aren't going anywhere. I've used both and honestly haven't seen some massive difference in failure rates on normal jobs. The old guy probably just likes his own way of doing things, which is fair, but it's not like you discovered some hidden secret. People act like one hardware choice is gonna make or break your whole career, but it's usually just preference.
