The worst day I've had in the shop involved a $400 slab of walnut

I was cutting the final panel for a built-in when my table saw kicked back and split the piece right down a knot. It happened in Spokane last Tuesday, and the sound still makes me cringe. What's your go-to method for salvaging expensive material after a major mistake?

That kickback sound is the worst. I'd check if the split can become a design feature, like filling it with a contrasting resin river.

Turning a mistake into a feature is a great idea. My last attempt at that just made the crack look like a sad little frown. It's a skill I clearly haven't mastered yet.

Kickback sound" is right, that's the sound of a plan changing fast. The resin river idea is solid, but it only works if the split is clean and goes all the way through. If it's just a surface crack like @derekl79 might have had, the resin can just sit on top and look tacked on. You really need to route out a clean channel for it to look right.
