That $200 fiber fusion splicer from a pawn shop was a total gamble but it paid off
Honestly, I found a used Sumitomo Type-72C at a pawn shop outside Denver for $200. Figured for that price, even if it was busted I could scrap parts. Cleaned the V-grooves, ran a test splice, and it worked perfectly on the first try. Saved me like $2k over a new unit, anyone else ever score a deal like that on used gear?

Yeah that's a Type 71C not a 72C, easy mixup since they look almost the same. Still a crazy good find for $200 though, those things are tanks even when they're beat up.

Man I had a similar thing happen with a Type 71B last year. Picked it up for $150 at a flea market and it looked ROUGH but after cleaning it up and swapping a couple caps it runs like a dream. @tarag28 you're totally right about these things being built to last. The build quality on those older models is just something else compared to the newer stuff. Definitely worth grabbing if you ever see another one beat up like that.
