Can we talk about those $30 'universal' lens spanner wrenches from Amazon?
The tips bent on the second retaining ring I tried, slipped, and gouged a customer's 50mm front element, so I ate a $140 replacement. Skip the cheap ones and get a proper adjustable spanner with hardened tips, has anyone found a decent one under $60?
I used to figure a spanner is a spanner, why pay more for the same flat bit of steel. Then I watched a cheap set round off a filter ring so bad I had to cut the thing off with a Dremel, and the glass survived but only by luck. The tips on those Amazon ones are soft as butter, they fold over the second you put real torque on a stuck ring. Now I check the tip hardness before anything else, since a $40 tool that saves one $140 element already paid for itself. Steer clear of the ones where the pins are just rolled sheet metal.
