Got a Nikon FM2 back from a customer in Phoenix after 3 weeks, and the shutter sounded like new again
I swapped the mirror bumper foam and relubed the shutter on this beat up FM2 from a guy in Phoenix. The mirror was slapping so hard it felt like a tiny hammer in your hand. Ran a test roll through it and all 36 frames came out clean. Anybody got a favorite lube for those old FM shutters? I have been using a light synthetic oil but wondering if there is something better out there.
Wait, you said the shutter sounded like new, but if the mirror was slapping that hard it's the mirror bumper foam doing that, not the shutter. The foam gets gummy and the mirror hits the frame instead of landing soft. Sounds like you got it sorted either way. Light synthetic is fine for the FM2 shutter, most of the old heads just use a tiny bit of watch oil and call it a day.
