Had a collector in Cleveland school me on Yashica Electro 35 light seals
Guy walked into my shop about 6 months ago with a box of six Electro 35s. He said the foam seals were fine on all of them. I pulled out my phone camera and showed him the light leaks on the back of one. He went quiet for a minute, then asked me to show him how to replace them properly. I spent 20 minutes walking him through cutting new seals from a sheet. He told me he had been shooting with pinhole light leaks for years and never knew. Has anyone else run into collectors who just assume foam lasts forever?

Nah, I gotta disagree a little here. Some of those old collectors have been shooting the same cameras for decades without issues, so it kinda makes sense they'd trust the original seals. Not everyone tears down every camera they buy - sometimes you just load film and shoot and hope for the best.

That foam lasts forever line gets a lot of people. A buddy of mine shot a whole roll of vacation photos with his Electro 35 before he realized the light leaks were turning half the frame into a hazy mess. He was so embarrassed he went out and ordered a proper seal kit that same day.

My Yashica Mat 124G had the SAME issue and I nearly cried when I saw those cursed orange light leaks on my first roll.
