Just learned how many parts are in a basic SLR shutter from a repair manual
I was going through an old Nikon FM2 service guide and it said the focal plane shutter has over 60 separate pieces. I always knew it was complex, but seeing that exact count in the manual blew my mind. Anyone else have a favorite repair guide that gave you a new respect for the gear?

Actually, the FM2 uses a titanium foil shutter. The focal plane shutter is the one with all the cloth curtains.

That titanium foil shutter in the FM2 is a work of art. I tried to adjust the timing on an old one once and just ended up with a box of tiny springs and levers. It felt like trying to put a watch back together after dropping it. I have so much more respect for the people who can actually fix these things.
