Just realized I was wrong about those cheap ultrasonic cleaners from the auto parts store for shutter assemblies.

I was convinced they'd leave a residue until I cleaned a sticky Minolta X-700 shutter with one and a 50/50 mix of distilled water and isopropyl, and it's been running smooth for 6 months now, so has anyone else found a surprising use for a tool from a different trade?

Got a cheap infrared thermometer from the hardware store for checking my car tires. Works great for finding hot spots on old amp chassis or checking if a motor is running too warm. Saves me from burning my fingers poking around in there.

Those cheap IR guns can be way off on shiny metal surfaces. The emissivity setting is wrong for most electronics and you'll get a false reading. I've seen them show a 50 degree difference from the actual temp on an amp chassis. You really need a probe or thermal camera to trust the numbers.
