Stopped using loupes for every focus adjustment

Lots of camera guys swear by loupes for focus work. I've found a basic magnifier and bright light do the trick most times. Do you really need all that fancy equipment?

Watch guys with ten grand of camera gear lose their minds over this. I once saw a DP use a $500 loupe to check focus on a monitor that cost more than my car. Meanwhile my uncle shoots weddings with a drugstore magnifying glass and one of those flashlights you get free at a bank opening. His stuff looks fine. Sometimes I think we just like having a fancy contraption to fiddle with so we feel professional. Next they'll sell us a $300 screwdriver to turn the lens ring.

Look at what most people actually watch these days, phone videos on a tiny screen. Nobody pauses to check if the focus is perfect. Feels like half this job is just buying things to prove you belong. Your uncle gets it, he's just getting the shot. We forget the tool doesn't make the craft.

Sometimes the fancy stuff just makes us feel better about ourselves.
