The old timer at my bench said never force a stripped screw, and I ignored him for one job
A retired tech named Walt, who used to run a shop in Bakersfield, told me plain as day to stop and drill the head off instead of muscling a stuck JIS screw out of a Nikon F2 baseplate. I figured I knew better and leaned into it with the wrong driver, and of course the head rounded off and I ended up drilling it anyway, plus a $30 replacement screw and two hours of my Saturday gone. He just looked at the chewed up slot and said nothing, which was somehow worse than getting yelled at. Now I keep a set of actual JIS drivers at the bench and a left hand drill bit set within arm's reach. What's your cutoff for giving up and drilling, or am I the only one who learns the hard way?
