TIL a guy in Denver told me to stop using grease on focus helicoids, and now I have a $60 repair bill and a stuck lens
Last Tuesday a customer brought in a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 with a stiff focus ring, and I told him the usual advice about cleaning out old grease and relubing with a light lithium mix. He said a retired tech in Denver told him grease attracts dust and gums up over time, so he used graphite powder instead. I tried it on a test lens, and within 3 days the focus ring seized up so bad I had to drill out the screws to get the barrel apart. Now I'm out $60 in parts and the lens is still in pieces on my bench. Has anyone else run into this graphite trend, or is it just a Colorado thing?
