TIL my old way of cleaning shutter blades was causing more harm than good
I was cleaning a Nikon FM2's shutter and kept seeing tiny scratches under my loupe. A repairer from the Seattle shop told me to stop using the canned air first, as it can blow grit deeper into the pivot. Now I brush with a soft sable brush before any air, and the difference is huge. What's your go-to method for a sticky shutter that doesn't risk abrasion?

Oh man, canned air is the WORST for that. I go super light with a tiny bit of Ronsonol on a q-tip first, just on the blade edges. Let it work loose the old grease, then a gentle brush.

Hold up, Ronsonol is basically just lighter fluid. That stuff can leave behind a residue of its own, which might attract more dust later. A tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol on the q-tip works better. It evaporates totally clean. Learned that the hard way on an old keyboard.
