Bought a $60 rain fly for my tent and it kept me dry through a 3 inch storm in Bend
I picked up a cheap rain fly for my two person tent before a trip to Bend, Oregon, and it cost me around $60. A storm rolled in and dumped about 3 inches of rain overnight, but I stayed completely dry while my buddy's tent got soaked inside. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of gear surprise them like that, or did I just get lucky?
3 inches in one night is a lot of rain, but I gotta say the fly isn't really what kept you dry on its own. A rain fly is just the outer layer that sheds water, the actual staying dry part comes from how you set the tent up and what the fly covers. If your buddy's tent got soaked, it's usually because his fly didn't extend low enough or he had a gap where wind blew rain in sideways. Cheap flies can work fine as long as they cover the whole tent body and you stake them out tight so the fabric doesn't touch the inner walls. So you didn't get lucky, you just set it up right. Your buddy probably needs to check his setup before blaming the gear.
