Debate: does the brand really matter for sleeping bags or is it all fill weight?
I was talking to this old timer at a campground in Montana last month, he said he's been using the same $80 bag for 15 years and it's kept him warm down to 20 degrees. Meanwhile I've spent over $300 on name brand bags that claim the same rating but I still freeze my butt off. He told me 'it's not the logo, it's how you layer underneath', and that hit different because I never even thought about that. Anyone else had a cheap bag outperform an expensive one or am I just doing something wrong?

Nah, fill quality matters way more than just weight or brand.

Yeah, read an article from Outdoor Gear Lab that tested a bunch of sleeping bags side by side. They had one cheap bag that was heavier but the fill clumped up after one night, making cold spots. A lighter bag with good down loft just worked way better for warmth. So you're right, the quality of the fill changes how warm you actually sleep, not just the number on the tag.

Fair point but also feels like people overthink this stuff. Most of us are just trying to sleep not win a gear contest.
