I used to think a cheap sleeping pad was fine until I froze my butt off on a trip to the Adirondacks last fall.

After three nights of shivering on a thin foam pad, I finally bought a proper insulated one rated for 20 degrees, and now I realize that skimping on ground insulation is the single biggest mistake I see beginners make, because you lose way more heat to the cold ground than to the air. What's one piece of gear you totally underestimated at first?

What about a decent headlamp?

You said decent headlamp, and that's key. I read a whole thread about how a cheap one fails when you really need it. The battery door pops open or the strap snaps. Spending a bit more on a known brand means it won't die during a blackout or when you're trying to fix something in a dark crawlspace. It's one of those things you don't think about until you're left in the dark.

Exactly, it's like the cheap version works fine until the moment you actually depend on it. I see this with so many things, from phone chargers to basic tools. People buy the bargain option for stuff that seems simple, but then it fails under real pressure. That false economy ends up costing more in stress and wasted time. Investing a little more in reliable gear for critical tasks just makes life easier. You don't want to be halfway through a job when your light gives out.
