Just faced a moral gray area reviewing my buddy's homemade sleeping pad

My friend made his own sleeping pad and asked me to review it for our camping group. It was comfortable at first, but after a few nights, the insulation shifted and left cold spots. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, so in my review, I only mentioned the good parts. Now I think about how others might waste money trying to copy his design based on my words. Has anyone else struggled with being honest in reviews when friends are involved? I feel like I let the community down by not being fully upfront. What would you have done in my place?

Last year, my buddy built a similar pad and I faced the same choice. I chose to keep the peace (no need for hurt feelings) because our trips are about hanging out, not perfect gear. Sometimes sparing feelings does more good than a very honest review.

Keeping quiet can actually hurt your friend in the long run. If the gear fails on a trip, that ruins the hangout way more than a gentle talk now. A real friend would want to know how to make their work better.

Yeah, I get that. I'm the guy who once nodded along when a friend showed me his homemade stove, only to watch it almost melt my boot. Viola_park has a point about safety, but man, choosing the right time to say something is its own skill. I'd probably still chicken out and just bring a backup pad hidden in my bag, like my own secret safety blanket. Saves the talk and the trip.
