My $45 'waterproof' tent leaked like a sieve on night one in the Smokies
Bought one of those ultralight single-wall tents from a brand everyone raves about, spent 45 bucks on the footprint too. First night at Deep Creek campground, steady rain hit and my sleeping bag was soaked by 3 AM, condensation plus seam failure all at once. Anyone else found a decent double-wall tent under $150 that actually holds up?
Single wall tents aren't the problem, people just don't know how to run them. You have to vent that thing right or condensation will soak you no matter what you paid. Seam failure is on you too, factory seams on cheap tents need sealed before you ever take them out, that's like camping 101. I've run a single wall in the Smokies in October rain and stayed bone dry because I pitched it right and sealed it first. A forty five dollar footprint for a cheap tent is also kinda wild, just cut a piece of tyvek for five bucks next time.
