My new tent came with a 'survival whistle' that sounded like a dying goose
I bought a mid-range 3-person tent for a trip to the Red River Gorge about three months ago. When I opened the bag, there was a little plastic whistle on a key ring labeled 'emergency signal device'. I thought, sure, why not. Fast forward to the first night, and a raccoon was getting way too interested in our food bag. My buddy said, 'Use the whistle!' I gave it a good blow, and instead of a sharp alert sound, it let out this weak, warbling honk. The raccoon stopped, looked right at me, and I swear it tilted its head. My friend started laughing so hard he choked on his s'more. We had to bang pots together to scare it off. Has anyone else gotten a totally useless piece of 'survival gear' packed in with their stuff?

Was it really an emergency or just a raccoon?

My old house had a motion light that went off all the time. It was mostly just the neighbor's cat, but one night it was a whole family of possums... they just stared at the light for a minute before waddling off.
